The Real Superhumans

25 Mar 10, Posted in Blog, Musing

I saw this documentary on the Discovery Channel recently called The Real Superhumans, which explores the notion that superhumans do exist among us. It tells the stories of 4 fascinating individuals who possess special talents and abilities, among whom, a blind man who sees and understands perfect perspectives, a man who survives sub-zero conditions longer than anyone can, a super human calculator and a woman who could see and taste music. It further suggests that these talents are hidden within us, and only reveal themselves among certain genetic oddities such as the individuals above, but advancement in modern genetics could one day make these talents freely accessible to anyone who wants them. I just wonder, what good does unlocking a pao gene do?

What if the cockroach is an endangered species?

01 Jan 10, Posted in Blog, Musing

Today, I just want to write something about cockroach. Yes, that pesky pest is probably one of our greatest enemy on this planet, the ancient creature that has existed long since the days of the dinosaurs. So why do we hate them so much? Sure they carry some disease and hygiene is not the top of their priorities. But is that the real reason that we hate them? Can’t they be a pet like you would keep a pet cricket?

I believe the only reason that we hate them is because how successful they are at survival. We really can’t stand the idea that some insects are actually more superior than us at the game of natural selection. You can swat, spray, squash them or do whatever it takes to commit genocide of the species, chances are, they’ll survive. They’ll be around long after we are all gone. They are at one end of the success-failure spectrum, of which on the other end you find most of the species that critically endangered today, ie. tigers, gorillas, rhinos, whales etc.

So can we love the cockroach? Or at least show some admiration of the species as a survivor? So what if cockroach is one of the endangered species today? Would we have used it as a mascot for wildlife conservation like the panda in the WWF logo?
